What Makes a Strong Portrait — Disrupt the Expected
What makes a portrait strong?
It’s easy to think it’s lighting, composition, or technical perfection.
But often, it’s something else entirely.
Sometimes it’s what you introduce.
An unexpected element can change everything —
the mood, the energy, the way someone holds themselves.
In this case, it’s water.
Water disrupts control.
It softens some people, reveals others.
It introduces movement, texture, and tension.
And most importantly, it changes behavior.
People stop performing.
They react instead.
That’s when a portrait shifts from something constructed
to something real.
That’s what I’m always looking for.
